2011 CMN needs your help to get started

Crazy Plant Lady says
FALL is a GREAT time to Divide your Perennials . Get more blooms, healthier plants AND do a good deed!

Charity fund raiser, the CMN Garden Project, is Looking for the plants you need to divide.

How do you know if you need to divide your plants ?
Plants that

* are not full in the middle, that appear to be choking themselves out ...
* have taken over the space they are in,outgrown it and are smothering other plants
* came with your house and you want gone
* You love and are willing to share, Or
* you look at and say, "What was I thinking when I bought THAT?"

Maybe you'd like to help but do not know how to do any of this? Just ask... I'll help you, help the project... Advice via email and if need be (and feasible) I'll come show you how or, even do the dirty work myself!

Various pics of the plant sale in action, rain or shine and the fabulous cast of many that pitched it!
I was asked to write "a little something" HAHAH they do not know me eh??

about the plant sale for our employee magazine.

I am sure they will cut the day light out of this to fit their space..but i wanted you all to see it. I mean every word. Thank you so very much for all you did! I have been slow in getting the blog updated and the official thank yous out due to the death of my grand dad..the occurred on the final day of the plant sale..he was much more like a father to me then anything and his loss is very large to me. So please forgive me I have not forgotten any kindness you all have shown me... I promise.

For most Costco employees CMN fund raising is something you only do in
the month of May. At Michelle Tarver's house it is a year-round
topic. Sometimes called the Crazy Plant Lady, she says she is...
crazy about plants, crazy about helping kids.

The plant sale began in May 2009 by accident. Michelle discovered a
simple seed sowing method called "winter sowing" and went overboard,
starting 72 milk jugs of various seeds outside and starting more
tomato plants inside than she alone could possibly use. So Michelle
asked Marketing Mgr Eric DeSatnick if they could sell them at the
store and use the money for CMN. With the green-light from Whse Mgr
Shannon Lundholm, the sale of those "extra" plants raised $3300 for
CMN in 2009.

Michelle went home to her husband and said excitedly, “If we can do
$3300 with no notice just imagine what we can do next year.” So
starting in June 2009, they solicited donations of potting supplies
from Blackmore Co and Griffin Greenhouse Supply, and also obtained a
bulk seed donation from Ball Hort. She also bought every clearance
priced “broken bag”of potting mix she could find. (“Whoever coined
the phrase 'dirt-cheap' was obviously not a gardener.”) She
conscripted her family (husband Aaron, 16 year-old twin sons Keiran
and Evan, 8 year-old son Duncan and her chief assistant, 6 year-old
daughter Abigail) to help sow seeds and nurture them to be ready for
the 2010 sale.

In February 2010, Michelle and Aaron reached out to local nurseries
and found a great partner in Lori Packard, of Packard Farms (Brockton,
MA), who over the course of the sale donated well over $2000 worth of
beautiful blooming plants and hanging baskets. They also received
sizable plant donations from Zabo Plant Inc, Pleasant View Gardens,
J.P. Bartlett Co., Connie Mayo, and Chris Wagner. (See her blog for
more details. http://gardenblog.aarontarver.org)

In April employees from the warehouse got involved. Eric DeSatnick,
Kandy O'Kelly, Lori Anne Stoner, Abedel Bedewey, Nicole True and their
families all rolled up their sleeves and got dirty at Michelle's home,
potting up over 1000 seedlings in one day. Says Michelle, “I got the
best compliment when I went back to work. 'Michelle, the people who
went to your house..they all say they did not do any work..but they
had a lot of fun!'”

Some people kept coming back for weeks to help pot more things up, and
they brought new people to help and have some laughs! Other employees
volunteered their time to transport the plants 26 miles from
Michelle's home to the warehouse: Foods Mgr Steve Beshim, Asst Whse
Manager Dan Gordon, FE Sup Lynne Miller, and Receiving Clerk Rob
Tricomi. And a perfect stranger, Marlene O'Brien, walked in off the
street to offer her time and talent to the sale after reading about
Michelle's efforts on an internet forum, GardenWeb.com. Other indispensably Garden-web helpers were the "tomato people" Connie Mayo and Chris Wagner they spend the late winter and early spring growing heirloom tomatoes, hot peppers and herbs seedlings specifically for Michelle to sell at the CMN sale.Plus the many helpful gardenweb winter sowing forum people who gave advice sent supplies and seeds!

Michelle also networked with the Master Gardener Program of
Massachusetts Horticultural Society to get plant savvy volunteers to
man the plant sale tables. Kathi Gariepy, MassHort Outreach
Coordinator, enthusiastically supported the project with her own time
as well as with the interns of the Master Gardener Program. Their
help was outstanding.

Says Michelle, “Of course, none of it would have happened without
Shannon's approval and full endorsement, the way she took the project
under her wing, assisting in getting staffing and advising on what to
grow and just being there on the days I was discouraged. I really
could not have done it with out her! And Eric DeSatnick and his wife
Jennifer, they helped keep the planting going and helped me find
solutions when challenges came up. Sheree Johnson was a great
supporter and committed her time to learning about the plants to
effectively sell them. Ed Pope, Asst FE Mgr, did a nice job of taking
care of the many volunteers I brought in... keeping them cool, fed and
happy! It really turned out to be a whole warehouse project.”

“Costco Avon's 2nd Annual Plant Sale is credited with raising $10,500
for CMN in 2010. That's a good feeling. We worked hard, but I think
we gained as much if not more than the kids and the hospital. We made
some new friends, increased our knowledge and got to watch the
warehouse become a community. I'd like to thank Jenn Kaczenski at
Children's Hospital Boston and Avon 303's management for empowering us
to do this, and Costco corporate for choosing such a great cause to
support.

“Now I am off to water the 200 or so perennials I have growing for
NEXT year's sale...”

Breathing, people from work ARE gonna come to the party. I do need LOADS of dirt and pots still( and food and some adult beverages and kid stuff) But am glad they are coming.

14 days to the Plant sale start.

Mass hort IS coming.( Thank you GOD...). if I could just get to SPEAK to them instead of playing phone tag

The Agribond I ordered in MARCH FINALLY showed up( in time for MORE frost...c'mon weather! Be nice for me please?!)

The Zabo Lilllies are growing quite nicely.
Still trying to line up pick ups for JP Bartlett's kind donations, and pleasant Gardens in NH. Need THOSE guys logos and Dana's at Broadway gardens, plus Kathy Berlos and Mass Horts for fliers and balloons.

And it get Better.. hear the sarcasm?

SO some bird brain (aka ME) left the majority of her seeds out side.. not a big deal until it RAINED.

I admit to crying when found them. Then all of us spent the next4 hours sowing anything that was not saveable. about 40 odd trays of seedlings9 its 8 six packs to a tray....

I am very tired of dirt.

SOS Save our sale. Please help

A hail Mary letter went out on Monday. So far no replies and There seems to be some confusion with MassHort the MG's speaker bureau. I was SOO counting on the MasterGardenrs to help staff the table. If you have a green thumb and want to spend a few hours directing people to the right plant for their needs and help sick kids at the same time PLEASE contact me!

To Whom It May Concern:

We are planning a charity plant sale to benefit Children's Miracle Network in support of Children's Hospital Bostonto be held beginning 30 April thru the end of May 2010 at Costco Avon. We would like your assistance.

We successfully facilitated a small-scale plant sale May 2009 and raised $3300. We aim to raise $10,000 in 2010. We are attempting to grow a great deal of the plants at my home. However, the recent flooding rains we received in March washed out a great deal of the plant material that was grown specifically for the sale for this year and plants intended for 2011.

We are asking for your support by replacing these plants though donations of:
Plants (herbs, veggies, perennials, annuals, bedding plants, shrubs, etc.)
* Growers mix and pots, fertilizers, insect and disease control products.

We are also in need of: *

Any staff that would like to spend a few hours sharing their knowledge of plants at the sale tables; monetary donations were always greater when a green-thumb was on hand to advise. Volunteers will receive a one-day shopping pass to Costco Avon, free parking, and a voucher for lunch at the food court.
*
Any other items you think would be helpful in our endeavor would also be welcome.

Costco Avon will provide one extra large Children's Miracle Network Balloon with your business information posted in a prominent location for any donation worth $250.00 at retail.

This request can be validated by contacting Shannon Lundholm (Warehouse Mgr),Ed Pope (Front End Assistant Manager) or Eric DeSatnick (Marketing Mgr) at Costco Avon, 120 Stockwell Dr, Avon, MA 02322, Tel 508-232-4001.

For any other questions, or to coordinate a donation, you may contact us directly.

Join me in the Happy seed sprouting dance!

The lilies are here!

In  50 lb boxes Each with mini pallets around them to protect them. (working at Costco I guess makes this notable and amusing. itty bitty pallets VS giant ankle crushing ones) .

They are outside and its too dark for a pic but I am hoping to get one tomorrow. Its an impressive packing job really..and should make beautiful plants! I am thinking 3 tubers per 4" pot all of same cultivar.. I have 2 kinds.
I am trying to help apply that rule of 3's for landscaping symmetry...and I think I can sell more plants that way .

This sale is shaping up to be FUN.  Boss Lady is making Jewelery! I can't wait to see it... Hey it's for a good cause!! And Chrissy is making "Toothfairy" pillows ... http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/B000GPWOGW loosely alnog these lines.

I have to get off my butt and decide on Crafts and load up Heather B with the supplies.. Patrice is making phone calls to al the garden clubs and craft stores to see who can help. Sheree is calling the nurseries I need Dirt..er  SOIL for the real gardeners and PLANTS. Aaron is hitting up hardware stores for conduit so he can build me some mini hoop houses. Johnnys seed let me buy the coverings at 25% off.  OH and WICKED PISSA COOL.. a lady we will call by her online name "Garden weed" is sending me pots... and has mentioned she may have plants for 2011! Yep I said I am officially planning 2011 sale already! AND another internet stranger from WAAYYY UP north  (past you Muscles Mo') has volunteered to come to the end of the universe (aka Dighton MA) and help with the POT PARTY in April! How ya like them apples!!

In the next few days I gota get those lilles potted, start tomitillos under lights, pinch all the plants I DO have under lights . It's heartbreaking at 1st but it makes a better plant you pinch off the big top growth to make the plant put on more so its stronger and fuller. And you can use the pinches to make new plants . But I have about 300 plants under lights.
So it's time consuming.
I need to start a bunch of Herbs and finish all the Winter sowing. Thankfully I am running out of WINTER! 56 days till plant sale and 32 days till SPRING!!  So its going all right need more dirt pots bodies and plants  but it is a controlled chaos... (do you really believe that?!)

Happy happy nerd dance... Books about PLANTS! shweet

Happy happy nerd dance... I had a garden friend recommend some books to me:

"The Well-Tended Perennial Garden: Planting and Pruning Techniques" by Tracy DiSabato-Aust

"American Horticultural Society Plant Propagation: The Fully Illustrated Plant-by-Plant Manual of Practical Techniques"

I have had both at one time or another from the library and loved them.  Now I have my very own copies to make notes in and get dirty!

Woot!

60 days...and PANIC

Ok, So this is the low point. I am stressed, grumpy and W_O_R_R_I_E__D.  Worried I do not have enough plants committed or people committed or donations secured. I feel like I am pushing a 1969  Olds 88 up hill in the rain with one hand tied behind my back. I KNOW once I crest the hill it will be a fast fun ride...but the top of the hill feels a long long way off.

So what's a girl to do?
I sketched the layout with one of the worker bees help ( Keiran aside from Playing a mean game of football spouting Math like his dad and cooking well can also draw.  I am sure he's mine but hes so talented I wonder how it happened some times! )

I potted up ALL THE tomatoes yesterday.( Marmand Supers weets early girls and 4th of July.
Aaron added more lights..that I stared Petunia baby duck and merlot madness under ( with thanks to BALL HORT)
I potted up the parsley and Cilantro in to 4" pots.
I made cuttings from  the  parsley and the basils

I practiced the cruel art of pinching plants to make the bushier and fuller on the Mini bell peppers and the Serrano Chillies... and used the pinches to make hopefully new plants.

Aaron made me a nice hot chocolate with Kahlua baileys and Kirkland vodka( if you have not tired it you should!)  and I Prayed.

God's idea of timing and mine do not match. but he is always just in time. So I'll keep pushing and hope I catch up to him soon. In the mean time if you want to help push please . Reach out and touch me OK?

Volunteers Needed - Tentative Schedule

We are in need of Master Gardeners (or other plant-smart people) to volunteer at the tables. Last year's sales and other donations were always greater when a plant-smart person was at the table.

The Plant sale is going to be each of the 5 weekends in May (Fri, Sat, Sun) from 10a - 6p.
Location: Costco Avon, 120 Stockwell Dr, Avon, MA 02322

April 30 - May 2 -- Featuring 4" Geraniums from JP Bartletts of Sudbury, MA.
May 7- May 9 (Mom's day) -- Featuring Proven Winners 10" hanging baskets from Pleasant View Gardens of Loudon, NH.
May 14 - May 16
May 21 - May 23 -- Highlighting on Heirloom tomato and veggies
May 28 - May 30 (Memorial day weekend) -- The lets-get-rid-of-all-the-plants sale... and featuring Flanders Poppies.

Set up and tear down is on the warehouse.

It may be inside the warehouse... that is still TBD. (But last year we were outside.)

What I DO know is: Each volunteer will get a 15 min break every 2 hours: a free one day shopping pass to Costco, and a voucher for lunch at the Costco food court. Parking and cold bottled water are free. And since it is at Costco... real bathroom facilities on site. (always a plus! lol)

We'd like to see 3 to 4 MG's do 4 hour shifts (10a-2p, 12n-4p and 2p-6p). We think we can keep 3 to 4 MG's pretty busy. So the more the merrier.

If the MG's have plant material to donate, we would welcome that as well. I am making bench cards for all the plants, so if they know what they are bringing and can tell me at least a week ahead of time... that would be helpful.

As I said before, Children's Miracle Network, on behalf of Children's Hospital Boston, will verify all volunteer hours so they can be credited towards volunteer requirements for the MG's.

Plant Sale - Donor Updates

The last 2 days have provided a couple new partners.

Cathy Berlo, of the Garden Patch (59 New State Hwy, Rt 44, Raynham, MA), is on board to give to the sale this year. (She also gave last year.) She has not yet determined what she will contribute.

PLEASANT VIEW GARDENS, INC.
7316 PLEASANT STREET
LOUDON,NH 03307
http://www.pvg.com

PVG is going to donate 10" hanging baskets ready to sell. We will probably feature them for the Mothers' Day Weekend. Unfortunately, PVG says we need to pick up the donation and they are 2+ hours drive from my house. Great donation. Hopefully there is someone closer to Loudon NH that will be willing to deliver them to Avon, MA.

We interrupt the plant sale for this MOST Important Project....

Aside from my Plants and my Hubby and my kids, I LOVE Bon Jovi's music.  Love it.  Anyone who knows me will attest to the hours I have assaulted their ears trying to sing along with the band's songs.

Guess what? The band called they want me to sing for them! ...Well Kinda... it's a contest to make a video and the winners in each city get to M_E_E_T THE _B_A_N_D!! I may get to hug Jon and NOT get arrested for it?!!

SWOON and WHOOT and I get to bring the family.( Yess Aaron you too..)

Now I have to tear myself away from seeds and dirt and plants and figure out how to use the video camera my mom gave us for Christmas.  It's a SIGN I tell ya!
WOOOHH HOOOO LIVING ON a Prayer take my hand we'll make it I swear!!

2009 Year in Pics for CMN and Garden Project

I think this is what Michelle really wanted to post last week (regarding pictures from last year).

Friday, February 5, 2010

This is the plant wagon's 3rd and final trip to stock up the 2009 plant sale.

Posted by Picasa
This is what $300.00 worth of seeds looks like. About $150.00 from Job Lot and Valueseeds.
Lots of these seeds (pic taken last June) are already sown and going to be a nice healthy 2nd season perennial for the 2010 sale.
Posted by Picasa
OK, you KNOW you are a freak when you get EXCITED beyond words at bargain (broken bag clearance) potting mix, garden soil and cow poo!! This was our clearance bonanza of soil stuff last July at Wally's...  like $30.00 for all of it... and yes it is already used!

This is the generous seeds and pot donation from "nan" at the wintersowing forum on Garden web!
Posted by Picasa
Everyone asks "Do you have a farm or a greenhouse?" and often say, "you must have a lot of land."  I have 3/4 acre (mostly shaded) and no greenhouse or hoophouse or coldframe or even "real" grow lights

But with the worker bee's help (and the apprentice worker bees we birthed)  and a lot of creativity we manage to grow a lot of plants. The ones here are the plants I came home from the May 2009 sale and sowed to get ready for May 2010. (which is in 84 days if you are counting BTW)
Posted by Picasa
This is the JACKPOT of seed donations I got from Ball Horticultural!  I could cover Dighton with the seeds in here! WHOOT

Posted by Picasa
My helper and entertainer.. She loves the plants as much as I do. But she makes sure I do not take it all too serious this is supposed to be relaxing right?? Right?! She is in front of the quasi greenhouse full of the 2010 perennials.
Posted by Picasa
Pics of the LOVELY donation I got from Blackmore Company!! NO MORE plastic cups! We are moving on up!!

PSA from your plants:

  • Pleas use rain water or melted snow to water us. The chlorine in municipal water is NOT good for us.
  • Use a GROWERS MIX that has peat-moss and perlite in it ( Like Pro Mix) NOT miracle grow soil to start seeds under lights. The growers mix is good for preventing damp off that will kill young seedlings.
  • Bottom watering  ( placing tray of seedlings and soil in to a plan of water to take up water from the bottom is also helpful.
  • Do NOT  peat pots. They wick moister out of the soil mix and dry out to fast or if too wet can lead to damp off and fungus problems
  • Feed seedling under lights a VERY weak solution of fertilizer after the real leaves show up. (like 1 part fertilizer to 10 parts rain water

Note to self:

Have a sign at the plant sale asking for 2011 volunteers. Get email addresses so I can do a plant sale mailer for anyone who does not want to miss it!

A HUGE "THANK YOU" to Trudi D. of WinterSown.org!

I filled out a SASE and she sent me a ziplock gallon baggie bursting with Veggie and Herb seeds. I glanced thru really quick... I'll catalog 'em tomorrow after work, but will be doing the happy dance all night thinking about those seeds!! WHOOT!

Exciting stuff!

So the plant sale prep is creeping along. The mass mailing went out Sat (Thank you, Mark O!) The Super Duo of Sheree and Heather spent lots of saliva to help me get them stuffed and closed. {note to self... next time use a SPONGE!}

Connie M and Chris W, who rode to my rescue last year with Tomato plants and peppers, have graciously agreed to grow some tasty heirloom 'Maters! Abdel B. is down to grow some veggies, and Lynne and Sheree are open to helping (but don't exactly know how just yet). Plus, I have several people, including Sam F, coming to my "Pot Party" in April to help "pot up" all the plants that accumulate here. So no cannabis, but I'll have margaritas and Bon Jovi!

I got GREAT news from Laura at J.P. Bartlett Co in Sudbury, MA; they have pledged us more than 8 dozen plants that will be READY TO SELL! They are a wholesaler that specializes in Geraniums! HUGE THANK YOU to them.

So it starts. Plant sale madness... 2010.

I should say "continues" as it really never stopped.  Since the inaugural plant sale last May I have been planting, planning, soliciting, scheming, coercing and collecting supplies and people and plants for May 2010.
I figure to sell about 3,000 plants and raise $10,000. If it was MORE that would be good, too!
I am about halfway there in  plants grown and will be dividing...  and the fabulous Connie who has agreed to  grow me some 'maters! WHOO HOO!  Hey, I am a glass-half-full kinda girl... I do have to make up the other half... I know, I know.. details minor details LOL...

But it's getting to be "GO" time.  The growing and begging for stuff starts in earnest this week, and Aaron since he started this pretty blog for me will have to migrate the old aarontarver.org page stuff here.  That logo above is a pic he took last summer in our yard BTW.  Very nice, yes?!  He is very good with the camera (Nikon D70 with a Tokina Macro that he loves, for any Photo-philes out there)

So stay tuned... I'll get this sorted out and be posting what I have done, what I am up to, and sharing info for the people who are nuts enough to join me in my "little" obsession... like how to WinterSow seeds   http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/wtrsow/
How to grow from seed http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/seed/
and how to grow under light, how to compost.  If you follow the links I already gave ya, in the top left it says "Forums." Click that and read down the list; you will find more forums of dirt, plants and how to grow them then you could have GUESSED were taking up space on the internet.  See ya around!
